Riau Archipelago Culture

This is a new province, formed in 2004 after separated from Riau Province in Sumatra mainland. Riau Islands consist from more than 3000 islands off the east coast of Sumatra, such as Karimun, Singkep, Lingga, Anambas and Natuna. Two of its main islands, Batam and Bintan are located near Singapore, so that automatically made them the power house of this young province. These two islands are favorites stop over places for people who want to travel to Singapore or Johor Bahru in Malaysia by ferry. There are many Chinese descendants in Batam, Bintan and Karimun islands, but they prefer to use Bahasa Indonesia with heavy Malay accent as mother tongue.
