West Sumatra Culture
The West Sumatra Province is the homeland of Minangkabau People. This majority tribe of the province (85%) is unique due to their matrilineal culture. Minangkabau’s Matrilineal culture has many unique traits, such as determined that lineage drawn from the mother's side, uncles are responsible to their nephews and nieces, married men live in their wives’ family home and also at inheritance matters. Minangkabau also famous for its spicy cuisines. Minangkabau’s young men tradition to go abroad helps spreading their cuisines across the archipelago. Now one is common to find Minangkabau restaurant or better known as Rumah Makan Padang almost in every corner in Indonesia. Other tribe from West Sumatra is Mentawai people who came from islands off westcoast of Sumatra. They have a completely different culture from their mainland siblings. West Sumatra keeps its own natural charm thanks to the Bukit Barisan Mountain Range which stretched from northwest to southeast of the region.
